Its not every day that an Oscar Award winning cinematographer passes through Vancouver, and even rarer is finding one who is prepared to donate a weekend to enthuse, inspire and educate a small but dedicated group of film-makers.

Here is a post by Dan Ax on a recent cinematography workshop with Andrew Lesnie (Lord of the Rings, I am Legend, King Kong).
When I spoke with Dan about the weekend experience, what struck me was Lesnie's simple, minimalist approach (which in my own interpretation translates to: be in the moment, know the artistic and emotional goal and then work with what's there) and his emphasis on gathering inspiration from all kinds of material-- art, books, theatre, etc, not just from photography itself. Reminders we can all take to heart...
